nelistening back, ‘interlude’ will feel like the perfect opening to ‘skylax’. a jazzy encore crawls in, morphing into a skippy hip-hop instrumental with jason’s signature flourishes all over it. aptly named as it is, this is the breathing space between whatever came before in your day, and the eleven deep house gems that are to follow. speaking of, ‘the love’ will have you gripped from the first bar. it glides the listener in, then subtly drops that signature, tightly-tuned bassline of jason’s and continues onto soulful vocals from there. ‘old dayz’ touches on a bit of a nostalgic note. the spoken vox cuts harken back to 90s hip-hop joints, playing over a looped latin sample-led beat. from there, ‘rawkicks 2’ shows jason’s rough and ready sampling style in action. a seemingly simple track, but one which has that special something which guarantees to keep people on the floor moving for its duration. ‘cut b’ contrasts this nicely, being a much cleaner production with tight drum programming and synth work. that said, it still has the classic jg atmosphere we love. closing out the first half of the album, ‘definition’ slows the pace ever so slightly, with its eternal pad structure that builds up the track’s momentum into something very mellow and deep.bringing in the second half of ‘skylax’, ‘john blue’ takes things back a notch further. a deeper tune, yet one that shows off an uncharacteristically punchy bass hit from jason. ‘last night’ is a track more reminiscent of jason’s first lost cuts ep on wax classic, sounding as if it had been freshly taken off an old tape with its sample-led beat and background hiss. the last four tracks of the album see a return to the ‘mastercuts’ and ‘lovedits’ series which fans will recognize from the ‘lost cuts’ records, with ‘lovedits 7’ and ‘mastercut 5’ respectively. the former is a laid back female vocal edit with the entire suite of signature jg touches while the latter is a garage house hit more crafted for the club. ‘bb’ brings the album to a close, twisting a disco/funksample over a pallet of drums and effects for the near six-minute duration of the track.all in all, this is the perfect follow up to jason’s debut album ‘313.4.ever’, with tracks for both the club and home listening. if you happened to miss the first album back in 2012, don’t forget that now you have the chance to grab it in a special double pack with ‘skylax’ on cd!so, needless to say, this timeless record is a must purchase for all collectors and djs out there

2020vision celebrates its 20th anniversary in style this year. as ever, the uk label will do things differently – no dwelling on times past and no back catalogue rehash. instead, 2020vision will release content, a compilation mixed by ralph lawson featuring 20 exclusive new original tracks and remixes from a dizzying array of arch collaborators. this album will be augmented by a series of parties across the planet

butane teams up with andras toth for the *elements of truth* ep, set to be released via butanes very own alphahouse imprint. andrew rasse aka butane, launched the alphahouse imprint back in 2005 amidst the minimal explosion, working with the likes of troy pierce and quenum in the early stages. now, looking back on how things have progressed and seeing the imprint reach a thirty-release milestone here, the label has made quite the standing in its time, releasing cuts from luminaries such as skudge, ricardo villalobos and ion ludwig to name a few. here we see andras toth return to the label with the duos second collaborative ep following *futures* back in 2011.

talk about saving the best until last. if you thought that the first two parts of awanto 3s opel mantra trilogy were good, just wait until you hear part 3. it delivers a brilliantly breathless conclusion to what could well be one of the strongest debut albums of 2014. by now, you should know the script. amsterdam producer steven van hulle has previously shown glimpses of his musical talents, either with sporadic solo productions (see his superb 2010 debut on rush hour, for five), or alongside friends from the dutch scene (san proper, young marco and tom trago, in particular). opel mantra, a debut album split across three 12 inch singles (a cd version will follow later in the year), is his big reveal – our first chance to wallow in his unique and thrilling fusions of deep house, detroit techno and a multitude of vivid global influences.

andy meecham is a man of many musical incarnations and has been since the early 90s. following on from projects like the now dormant bizarre inc and revived dub-disco duo chicken lips, it is as the emperor machine that he explores his most experimental sounds. to date there have been three full length albums on dc recordings after the project was initially started with the idea of creating music using just one synth, the roland sh-3a. the results lay out the staffordshire mans love of vintage synthesisers for all to see, and combine tough edged disco beats with more cerebral cosmic melodies into alluring soundscapes that bend your mind and drive your feet. as well as a slew of 12s and lps, the emperor machine has also turned his hand to remixes of giants like moby, daft punk and royksopp, and has previously taken a live and inspiringly psychedelic incarnation of the project to clubs and festivals across the planet.

the story behind this record begins in 2004 on newbury street in boston massachusetts. juice belushi founding member paul foley is dressed head to toe in 80s regalia, including vest, fingerless leather gloves, fedora and chain connecting nose-ring to ear pierce. its like a scene out of michael jacksons bad, minus the dancing. at his feet is a boom box blasting freestyle and 80s electro-funk, hes handing out mix cds. needless to say we were intrigued!

top quality remastered reissue of oses very rare and sought after old school vocoder electro jam *computer funk*, a stone cold classic with an awesome phat analogue bassline and some of the best vocoder vocals ever recorded. originally released back in 83 on the tiny florida label bound sound and produced by the great james mccauley, this is miami electro at its finest and it is easy to see why it has become such a holy grail with djs and collectors. must have.

for nearly a decade, tycho has been known as the musical alias of scott hansen, but with the release of awake – his second lp for ghostly international – the solo project has evolved into a three-piece band. relating closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, the record is situated in the present, sounding more like hansen than drawing from his influences. this is, in many ways, the first true tycho record.

jimmy edgars blossoming ultramajic imprint gets off to a typically brazen start in 2014 with an ep of fiercely visceral club music from us born, berlin-based producer danny daze. a self-confessed lover of classic electro, the 3 tracks present contain the mechanical aesthetics and skewed sonics of the labels he holds close to heart, whilst packing an undeniable punch that will see these drawn for time and time again. daze is the first in a whole slew of acts to be welcomed onto the roster over the course of the year, and marks another exciting chapter for the burgeoning label.

lorca kick starts 2014 with forgive me love / naoko, his debut release on breachs (aka ben westbeech) naked naked imprint, joining the ranks of dusky, dark sky, midland, mak & pasteman and westbeech himself. the two-track ep follows up lorcas highly acclaimed 2013 if i told you ep on 2020 midnight visions, and his stellar remix of ghostpoets cold win which received widespread support, with midland tipping it as quite possibly the remix of the year. with highly lauded releases on dummy, throwing snows left_blank imprint and church, lorca has made a strong impression in the two short years he has been producing. his superb cant see higher / missed me ep in 2012 on dummy was the turning point, transforming him from a promising young talent into an exceptional one, gaining support from the likes of bonobo, rob da bank, deetron and scuba… this latest release meets building expectations, both tracks incredibly smooth, nostalgia-inducing and heavily textured, solidifying lorcas unique sound.

for over 12 months thomas feriero aka avatism, our friend and label partner, has been staying at home and working on his album. he moved to berlin to work on it and now sadly (for us) yet (gladly) for him he is moving back to milan. poof! just like that. so what did this year entail exactly? well for some of us not much. we got to see him in his studio comfy pants a couple of times (he wears slippers) we heard his studio woes, ate pasta with him, drank beers and of course got to hear his album at every juncture. while this self-imposed exile may have been a little worrisome the result is fortunately spectacular. adamant is a glimpse into how a city shapes a life and how intrinsically life then shapes music.
